Traumatic Injuries

Trauma is a physical injury which may result in wounds, broken bones or internal organ damage. At CNSI, we’re here to the rescue when you’re faced with those sudden scary moments!

Head injury

Head injuries occur on the scalp, skull, brain, and underlying tissue and blood vessels. They can range from bumps and bruises on the head to concussions, open wounds, a fractured skull, or internal bleeding and brain damage.

Most commonly, head injuries are a result of car accidents, falls, contact sports, violence, or child abuse.

Head injury symptoms vary; mild symptoms include:

  • sensitivity to noise and light
  • a headache
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • memory problems
  • blurry vision
  • fatigue

Heavier symptoms include:

  • severe headache
  • slurred speech
  • difficulty walking
  • seizures and convulsions
  • one pupil is bigger than the other and doesn’t constrict when exposed to light

The extent of the injury will determine how it’s treated. Our compassionate and experienced doctors will be able to assess your head injury to determine the course of action.

Spinal Fractures

Spinal fractures are cracks or dislocations in the backbones. Most fractures happen because of high-velocity impacts like car accidents or falls. Small fractures can be healed with rest and medication, but more severe fractures require medical interventions to prevent serious nerve damage, paralysis, or permanent spinal cord injuries.

Symptoms will differ based on the location and severity of the injury; commonly, it’s a pain in the back that gets worse when moving. Tingling, numbness, weakness of limbs, muscle spasms, and loss of bowel and urinary control are other symptoms.

Treatment will also vary according to the location and severity of the fracture. Minor fractures may just need a back brace and rest, but some of the other interventions we provide are physical therapy for rehabilitation; medication to help control pain, bowel and bladder dysfunction, muscle spasms, and blood pressure; and surgery.

Peripheral nerve injuries

Peripheral nerves are commonly injured from accidents, sports, or falls. If these fragile nerves are injured, it affects the brain’s ability to communicate with muscles and organs.

Symptoms will differ according to which type of nerve fibre is damaged, but they include excessive sweating, gastrointestinal issues, muscle weakness, cramps, muscle spasms, trouble with balance, walking and motor control.

Dr Jokonya will assess your condition to let you know what treatment is right for your optimum healing. Treatment includes rest, pain medication, or physical therapy.

Surgery for peripheral nerves entails freeing an entrapped nerve, removing damaged parts of the nerve, or more complex kinds of surgery where tendons are transferred from one muscle to another to restore muscle function.
