Spine Conditions
The spine is a crucial part of the main control centre of the body. Let us help you maintain and recover your spinal health and strength so that you’re standing proud and walking tall.
Below are some of the spinal conditions and injuries we can help you with.
Degenerative conditions
Degenerative spine conditions are where the normal structure and function of the spine is gradually lost over time. They often occur because of ageing, but also happen due to tumours, infections, or arthritis.
Symptoms include pain, limited mobility, weakness, sensory loss, and bladder and bowel issues. The type of degeneration and severity of it will dictate the treatment, like exercise for flexibility and muscle strength, braces for support, or medication. Herniated discs and spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal) will require special surgery.
Spinal trauma
Spinal trauma is when there’s an injury to the spinal cord, column, or bones surrounding the spinal cord. The spinal cord holds nerves that relay signals from the brain to the body, so damaging the spine can result in permanent changes to your body’s functions.
These kinds of injuries usually require surgery to repair bones or relieve compression on the spinal cord. At the Cognito Neuro-Science Institute, we offer premium care for injured patients with our years of knowledge and experience with skeletal fixation, soft tissue repair, intensive care, and rehabilitation.
Spinal tumour
Spinal tumours are growths that occur in your spinal canal or in the spinal bones. They can compress spinal nerves, which can cause pain, neurological damage and permanent nerve damage, cause changes in bowel or bladder function, and lead to loss of movement or sensation. They can be life-threatening or lead to paralysis.
We make every effort to catch a tumour early and treat it fast, so that you regain nerve function as quickly as possible and prevent the loss of other functions.
Treatment for a spinal tumour may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or other medications.
Spinal vascular malformations
Spinal vascular malformations are abnormalities of artery and vein connections in or next to the spinal cord. Lesions cause dysfunction that affects strength and sensation and can cause life-threatening issues.
Dr Jokonya has various options to treat this condition according to what kind of lesion you have, its size, and where it is. Treatment can involve surgery, endovascular embolization (a procedure where blood vessels are filled or closed to prevent rupturing or bleeding), radiation, or a combination of treatments.
Chronic back pain
When pain is present for more than three months, it’s considered chronic. Most back pain comes from muscle strain, injuries, or a malformed spine, but certain illnesses can also cause chronic pain.
According to your condition, it’s often the case that we’ll simply prescribe pain relievers while you recover from an injury. Sometimes physical therapy, a back brace, or anti-inflammatory injections are prescribed to help alleviate pain and restore regular function. Surgery is usually the last option considered.
