Pain Management

Pain affects us not just physically but emotionally too — sometimes, it feels unbearable. At Cognito Neuroscience Institute, we’ll help you manage your pain so that you can walk, dance, or even just get up out of bed again.

Chronic Pain Syndrome

When pain lasts for months or years after an illness or injury, it’s called Chronic Pain Syndrome (CPS). It also happens when there’s no obvious reason for pain. Pain that’s almost always there can take a massive strain on your health on all levels, but with Chronic Pain Syndrome, it may intensify with stress or activity. It’s mostly caused by a miscommunication between the brain and nervous system, where the neurons become hypersensitive to pain.

Symptoms include but aren’t limited to:

  • Joint pain
  • Aching muscles
  • Burning pain
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep problems
  • Mood disorders like depression and anxiety

At Cognito Neuroscience Institute, we offer comprehensive treatment plans to help nurture you back to your radiant and balanced self. Some options include:

  • Pain relieving medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Nerve blocks to alleviate pain signals
  • Certain behaviour therapies to improve mood

We’re here to help.

Acute pain management

Acute pain happens suddenly and can be severe but doesn’t last very long. It usually goes away once the cause is tended to. Sometimes acute pain is difficult to treat, as it may involve myriad physical and psycho-emotional components that contribute to the pain. Symptoms are often from tissue and bone injuries, inflammation, a surgical operation, or a brief disease.

To find the cause of the pain, Dr Jokonya will ask about your medical history and perform various diagnostic tests, including blood tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, or nerve condition studies.

Treatments we can support you with include:

  • Anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Opioid and muscle-relaxant medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Exercises to relieve pain and support recovery
  • Antidepressant medication
  • Steroid injections to reduce inflammation
  • Nerve blocks (local anaesthetic to block nerve activity)

Back pain

Where it comes from, how the pain impairs you, and whether the muscles are in spasm will determine how your back pain is treated.

Many types of back pain can be treated at home with the advice of our qualified doctors. Various medications like pain relievers, muscle relaxants, topical ointments, opioids, or antidepressants can also relieve back pain while you heal. Physical therapy helps strengthen the back and abdomen and increases flexibility.

In severe cases, you may resort to cortisone injections to decrease inflammation or come for surgery to create more space in the spine or relieve herniated disks.
